"Are You Experienced?"
It was a Jimi Hendrix song of the late 60's. We're not quite sure what he was talking about then,
but today, we are positive the question is essential for Project Managers.
Many enterprises are finding it is a competitive advantage to improve the performance
of their Project Managers, we still encounter a few that that invest their training funds
in programs that have no impact on project success or Project Manager Skill and Competence.
The result: "project managers" who have never managed a project to successful closure.
They may not even be able to tell you how to do so. What you really need is Project Managers
who can cite their successes, and explain why they are successful.
What is your alternative? Here's one: asapm's Performance-Competence-based Certification program assesses whether your practitioners actually demonstrate competence, and can prove their performance. Our
Certification programs are now complete, and the certifcation section of this asapm website contains pages that help you select, plan,
prepare and achieve your Advanced Project Management certification.

CompModel: Tool and Process
(Click here to skip all this background, and just get CompModel).
CompModel is a tool and process that we've used since 1983 to assess key Project Roles,
then identify the Competences needed to perform them effectively. Effective learning providers use
the results together with Instructional Design to target organizational learning requirements,
and then deliver the right learning or coaching experience for each audience.
CompModel Background
Release 3 of the asapm Competence Model broke asapm download records, but it was intended to be a temporary solultion, until we completed the USA's National
Competence Baseline. Now that the NCB and our Certification program are complete, this Release 4.0 is structured with the
Competence Elements and Groups against which we assess Project Managers and Practitioners in our 4-L-C
Four-Level Performance Competence-Based PM Certification Program.
This CompModel 4.0 release has one key Competence statement for each element. While CompModel can help you prepare for
certification, it is more designed to help you develop a training and Competence Development Plan for individuals,
your project team, or your organization. And, the model covers roles, such as Project Sponsor and Resource Manager, for which we have no certification, because
a project team is only as effective as its weakest link.
How We've Used the CompModel Tool
Several of us have used CompModel and its supporting processes to improve PM effectiveness for over 26 years.
Here are some of the ways we've used it:
- Set up Assessment Centers, staffed with professional assessors, to assess Project Manager Competence.
- Assessed Project Mgmt. Office staff to determine their strengths, and identify weaknesses to concentrate upon.
- Set up Project Mgmt. Offices to assess their organization, and coach project practitioners in their gaps.
- Early in high-risk projects, assessed the teams, as part of the plan to reduce many project risks.
- Identified the best use of training funds to fill an organization's greatest PM Competence gaps.
- Established measurable learning and development processes for organizations working with Maturity Models.
