How PM CompModel™
Contributes to Project Success

"Are You Experienced?"
It was a Jimi Hendrix song of the late 60's. We're not quite sure what he was talking about then, but today, we are positive the question is essential for Project Managers.

As many enterprises are finding it is a competitive advantage to improve the performance of their Project Managers, we still encounter a few that that invest their training funds in programs that have no impact on project success or Project Manager Skill and Competence.

The result: "project managers" who have never managed a project to successful closure. They may not even be able to tell you how to do so. What you really need is Project Managers who can cite their successes, and explain why they are successful.

What is your alternative? Here's one: The asapm PMCertSM certification program will assess whether your practitioners actually demonstrate competence. As our programs roll out, this asapm website will add pages such as this one to help you plan, prepare and improve your Project Management learning.

CompModel: Tool and Process (Click here to skip all this background, and just get CompModel). CompModel is a recent update of a tool and process that we use to assess key Project Roles, then identify the Competences needed to perform them effectively. Effective learning providers use the results together with Instructional Design to target organizational learning requirements, and then deliver the right learning or coaching experience for each audience.

CompModel Background
Release 2 of the asapm Competence Model broke asapm download records in its initial year, but it was intended to be a temporary solultion, until we completed the USA's National Competence Baseline. Now that the NCB is complete, this new Release 3.5 is structured along the Competence Elements and Groups against which we assess Project Managers and Pratitioners in our 4-L-C Four-Level Competence-Based PM Certification Program..

The updated CompModel 3.5 release has one key Competence statement for each element. In actual certification-level assessment, there may be 3-5 criteria, so while CompModel can help you prepare for certification, it is more designed to help you develop a training and development plan for individuals, your team, or your organization. And, the model covers roles for which we have no certification, because a project team is only as effective as its weakest link.

How We've Used the CompModel Tool
Several of us have used CompModel and its supporting processes to improve PM effectiveness for over 20 years. Here are some of the ways we've used it:

  • Set up Assessment Centers, staffed with professional assessors, to assess Project Manager Competence.
  • Assessed Project Office staff to determine their strengths, and identify weaknesses to concentrate upon.
  • Set up Project Offices to assess their organization, and coach project practitioners in their gaps.
  • Assessed the teams of individual, high-risk projects, as part of the plan to reduce the risks.
  • Identified the best use of training funds to fill an organization's greatest PM Competence gaps.

CompModel SlideShow
To learn more about using CompModel, see our slideshow. If you have a fast internet connection the (Macromedia Flash) file is about 1.0Mb), click this link. If you do not have a fast internet connection, the slideshow is also included in the download, available from the next page.

SlideShow Navigation Instructions:

  • Click with the mouse button to move to the next slide.
  • To rewind to page 2, right click the slide, select Rewind, then left click the slide. We don't understand why it works that way that either! But then we are Project Managers, not movie producers.

Note: The PM CompModel tool has been licensed to asapm by ProjectExperts, and adapted by asapm to align with our National Competence Baseline. Sales proceeds beyond license fees from those who license the Pro versions of the PM CompModel go to support the new PMCert Certified Project Manager program.
