Certify!Certification
Intro
Certification for project management by professional associations
is relatively young with the first program starting in 1984 and followed
by a second in the early 1990s. Both certification programs have been
successful and made significant differences in improving understanding
of project management around the globe. asapm is using more advanced
thinking to design certification for individuals in different
positions within organizations to benefit both individuals and employers.
First, project management certification is a professional association's
authentication of one's qualifications, compared to a standard for performance.
It should not be confused with licensing, the issuing of certificates
for public safety (e.g., physician) or issuing certificates for the generation
of revenues (e.g., business license). Also, it should not be confused
with registration or accreditation, the passing of judgment on an organization
and its level of Competence or capability.
US professional associations are encouraged by the Government to establish
certification programs that set standards for professionals and administer
programs that lead to certification. Take for example the Association
of Certified Public Accountants. This organization sets the standards
for US government accounting practices and generally accepted practices
for businesses.

Value of Certification
Certification in one's professional field adds value to that
individual and his/her employer. This authentication of an individual's
professional qualifications, gives assurance to employers and prospective
employers that a person has been tested and found qualified by meeting
the standards. Businesses rely heavily on the certification of individuals
for hiring and placement.
For the individual, attaining certification is often a landmark in his/her
career. Individuals are entitled to use the acronym associated with the
certification on documentation and correspondence. Peers, subordinates,
and supervisors will acknowledge the career milestone achieved by the
project management practitioner. There is pride associated with achieving
a status that not all people will pursue and a limited number can achieve.
For more information on the Value of Certification, see the article
by asapm President Lew Ireland.
asapm Certification Program
asapm certification program measures competence
for individuals working in different areas of project management. For
example, the following positions are a critical part of an organization's
project management Competence and would be, in some form, tested for position
competence.
- Senior management or project sponsor - examining the qualifications
of senior managers to link strategic goals with tactical direction.
- Resource Managers - those who prioritize projects and allocate resources
to them appropriately.
- Project Directors or Program Managers - examining the Competences
of individuals with responsibilities for managing multiple projects.
- Project Managers - examining the Competences of individuals with
responsibilities for managing single or multiple projects with varying
complexity.
- Project Specialists - examining the Competences of individuals with
responsibilities for planning and tracking projects, primarily cost,
schedule, risk, and scope work.
- Project Team Members - each team member accepts responsibility for
managing their assigned part of the project. If Team Members don't embrace
that responsibility, and execute it well, the project will fail.
