1. Sign Up Now to Attend the Delivering Project Excellence Conference in Scottsdale AZ, June 4-7
Short Notice! Make your reservations and sign up now for the Delivering Project Excellence Conference, in Scottsdale AZ June 4-7. You have never seen a conference quite like this one, and below we'll explain why. It sounds so intriguing that asapm will be represented with a booth promoting our Competence-Based certifications, IPMA, and our Competence Enabler program. We understand that our friends from PMForum will be there with a booth too.

Much of our audience has been around PM for years, so you may remember the Project Leadership Conferences of the early to mid-1990s. That series became the gold standard in Project Management-related conferences that others, such as professional associations, soon copied. Dick Rutledge, originator of the Project Leadership Conference, is now back in the game with an exciting new venture, the Delivering Project Excellence Conference.

Focused at a range of participants from Project and Program Managers to Executives (IT and others) who are involved with Projects and Programs, this is a great opportunity to get the latest information from a stellar group of speakers. This conference even has a Chief Learning Officer, plus another innovation, a Conference Concierge. See the intro below from the event website:

The June 2005 event evaluations provided solid testimony that today's Project Managers are hungry for transformational learning in the leadership, communications and professional skills areas, while also insisting on top flight presentations in these core Competence interest areas: PMO, Project Performance, IT Governance, Six Sigma, Risk Management, Security, and Portfolio Management. The 2005 attendees voted with their evaluations indicating that 100% would return, for a similarly high-octane program, in June, 2006.

asapm members receive a $100 discount on the Delivering Project Excellence Conference fees (just mention asapm). To find out more, go directly to the Conference website. Dick is so thorough he even researched the cost of airfares before he contacted us. We're impressed!

2. Call to Action: Attend Gartner Portfolio & Project Management Summit
Gartner's June 25-27 Beverly Hills-based Project & Portfolio Management, a strategic summit for optimizing business is such a great event that IPMA (International Project Management Association), has signed on as the Global Event Partner. And, because asapm is the USA member of IPMA, we will provide a guest speaker. According to the front page of the IPMA website, Stacy Goff will present the keynote; we don't see that yet on the agenda, but from the topics and list of speakers, this looks to be a great session anyway.

Best of all, this event is free, to qualified participants. What is that target audience? From the event website, "The program is designed to benefit CIOs, CFOs, COOs and other IT Decision-Makers who oversee companies, organizations and departments that are project-based and knowledge-resource intensive."

And now, we need a favor from you! Gartner would like IPMA/asapm to enroll 25 qualified attendees in this event. We are already attending, but we don't count in the targets. So go get youreself enrolled; call all your IT decision-maker friends and get them to attend, too. You see, this is win-win-win! To qualify, go to this link, and record asapm as the place you heard about the conference. Then complete the rest of the form.

You can also help us by forwarding those two previous paragraphs to those you know would be interested.

asapm will represent IPMA and of course ourselves with a booth, and asapm President Lew Ireland has supplied copies of his popular Cleland/Ireland book, Project Manager's Portable Handbook for a booth raffle. And once again our Competence Enablers will get a chance to get some great exposure. See you there!

3. PrezSays: Project Manager’s Competence in Emotional Intelligence
Despite the fact that it is a dated concept, we still see frequent talk about projects and the “triple constraint”. In 1994, a project manager mentioned four constraints – cost, schedule, performance, and people. He considered the human factor to be as important as the other three, but project managers may often overlook people as a critical part of their projects. Project management literature gives little or no attention to how people contribute to the success of projects.

That is the lead-in for asapm President Lew Ireland's latest observations, where he goes into the key behavioral factors effective Project Managers demonstrate. How's your Competence in Emotional Intelligence? To find out, click here.

4. asapm Elections 2006 Opening June 1
The 2006 asapm Elections open June 1, and two positions are up for election: President and Director of Education.
The Elections Project Team will send the ballots to eligible asapm members, and Elections Chair Graham Neale will collect and compile the votes. If you are eligible to vote and do not receive a ballot by Saturday June 3, please contact asapm headquarters.

President
Current asapm President Lew Ireland will run for office again; he has no one to oppose him. The statement below, from Lew's last campaign, is still current and correct.

My Goal as President is to work with asapm Board of Directors and other volunteers to:

Director of Education
Dr. Gary Klein, Professor of Information Systems at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, has agreed to run as Director of Education. This is exciting for asapm because Gary is interested in bringing Acadamia and Enterprise PM practices closer together. Below is Gary's background, and his statement for the office.

Background
Gary Klein is a Professor of Information Systems at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Throughout his 25 year academic career he has held many posts relating to academics: in administration as the Dean of the College of Business at two universities; as a researcher in the field of management science and project management; and as an instructor in statistics, information technology and project management. He currently teaches the course “Bridging Strategy and Tactics: Managing Project Managers” through the Distance MBA program at UCCS.

Before entering academics, he served with a major Information Technology consulting firm in the Kansas City area and as Director of Information Technology for a regional financial institution. He has had a strong interest in project management for many years, has been a member of Project Management Institute for seven years, asapm for one year, and is a founding member of the Project Management Special Interest Group of the Association of Information Systems – the leading professional organization for Information System interests among university faculty.

Statement of Intent
The gap between education and profession often seems large, but there are many common goals between institutions of higher learning and professional societies. These include the advancement of the profession through a commonly understood set of knowledge and Competence standards, providing opportunities to improve our understanding of the duties of the profession, and the promotion of high ethics among the professionals in the work place. I believe it crucial to the success of any institute of higher learning to develop intricate ties with professional societies, as well as private and public organizations, to better prepare tomorrow’s workforce and help to further advance the practice.

Gary's goals and programs are also listed on the asapm website. Click here to see them.

One of the things we really like about ProjectSummit is the co-location of Project Managers and Business Analysts in the same conference. See the statement below from the ProjectSummit FAQs online:

The co-location of Project Summit & BusinessAnalystWorld is a natural fit and will benefit both attendees and sponsors alike. Through focus groups and discussions with industry professionals, we have come to the conclusion that there a strong synergy between the project and business analysis professionals. 6. Duncan, Goff presenting to Young Crew at IPMA Shanghai Congress 2006
They caught us in a vulnerable moment. Dr. Michael Gessler, Chairman of the IPMA Young Crew program, asked at the London Council of IPMA Delegates meeting if North America could provide outstanding professional trainers who would volunteer our efforts for the IPMA's October Shanghai International Young Crew Workshops 2006. With a theme of Culture, Competence, Cooperation and Community (4 C 4 You) Bridging the Project Management Gap, and since several of us would be in Shanghai to speak at the IPMA World Congress anyway, we succumbed.

Young Crew is a key component of IPMA's strategy for the growth and nurturing of the project leaders of tomorrow. The main goals of the IPMA Young Crew Initiative are to provide experimental learning, identify the needs of the young and provide opportunities for interaction and information exchange.

Gearing up the Young Crew in the USA is one of the interests of our candidate for the asapm Board position of Education Director, Dr. Gary Kline. Thus the timing is perfect for asapm to get involved with Young Crew. Stacy Goff will be presenting his Increasing Project Management Competences workshop, that explores the differences between basic PM knowledge, and the skills, behavioral attributes and performance Competences today's effective Project Manager wields. The workshop also applies the wildly popular asapm version of his PM CompModel Competence assessment and development tool. Bill Duncan will present Project Team Working. The title is intentionally a little bit awkward in English, but that is in order to grab the reader's attention. Duncan's topics will include:
— Understanding motivation
— Delegating the right way
— Conflict management
— Communicating with your team
— Team building exercise

We think the Young Crew participants are in for a real treat. In addition to Goff and Duncan from the USA, some of the greatest luminaries in the World Of Project Management are also presenting their sessions in Shanghai. And speaking of Shanghai, we have received word that over 350 Speakers have signed up to present at the 20th IPMA Congress in Shanghai, scheduled for October 15-17. The early bird discount is valid through June 30, and asapm members receive a 20% discount on top of that!

7. asapm Marketing Director Morgan Henrie on Networking, Speakers' Bureau, Conferences
As I write this, it is the beginning of the Memorial Day Weekend and the kickoff of another great summer, for those in the Northern Hemisphere that is. For many project managers we also find that we are deeply buried in those heavy construction projects that have been waiting for the good weather to arrive. Yet, busy as summer is we need to be looking forward to the next project and next opportunity.

Finding that next golden opportunity often comes through personal or professional contacts, such as your asapm membership and participation. Networks provide broad exposure and name recognition. Let’s face it, without positive name recognition, obtaining that next appointment is always harder to achieve. As your organization, asapm is offering each of you a method to enhance your network and obtain increased name recognition - join the speakers bureau.

For those who regularly check the asapm web page, (www.asapm.org) you’ve probably noticed the following item:

Let's get the word out! asapm is forming a Speakers' Bureau, a service with two target audiences. Alex Brown is Project Manager, and he is interested in your interest. . First, for qualified speakers who can explain the advantages of Competence-Based certifications, and offer scintillating presentations that will enthrall audiences. Second, for harried PM-related event planners, who desire a fresh perspective in their speakers. We have a Project Manager (Morley Selver, of Project Doctors. Watch the website for details. If you wish to be a team member for this project, or cannot wait to join the rush, Contact Us!

This is your professional organization, providing you the opportunity to contribute to the project management discipline as well as to expand your professional contacts and increase your national/international name recognition. Yes, you do have something to say that other project members will want to hear. While experience is a great teacher, I know I will not live long enough to make enough mistakes to learn all I need the hard way. I want to hear how you handled that last major issue, opportunity, change request, or implemented that new PM tool that meant the difference in being successful. I want to expand my knowledge base using your experience and I’m not alone.

So jump in and contact us! Become a member of the speaker’s bureau. Jump to the asapm web site and click on the contact us link. Let us know what areas you would like to speak about and we will try to match up our speaking requests with your skill sets.

While you are jotting down your speaking topics, jot down June 19-22, Washington, DC for the 2006 Project Summit & Business Analyst World conference. As well as June 25-27 Gartner Project & Portfolio Management Summit in Beverly Hills, CA. Two great opportunities to learn new project management skill sets as well as expand that professional network.

Enjoy the summer, try to keep the work hours under 70 a week and join the asapm Speakers Bureau. We receive requests for those hands on project managers who can provide real life experience on what did and did not work. Remember, project management is the practitioner’s discipline where we learn from each other!

8. Why So Many Conferences?
No one has asked yet, so we will. Why so many Conferences?

First, Conferences have been the best way (after word of mouth) to "get the word out" about asapm. It's sad, but some people still think there is only one PM society in the USA.

Second, as asapm and our certification body PMCert roll out our advanced competence-based certifications, some people think that some exam-based tla (three letter acronym) is the only certification that is available in North America.

Clearly, we need to get the word out. It involves our catch-phrase, "Are You Certified As a PM?" (note that "as a pm" is asapm), that exposes other certs as certifying in project management not as Project Managers. We also have our distinction that while we start with a knowledge-based cert, we support a full progression towards competence with professional assessment of skills, behavioral attributes and performance competence, something no other organization in the USA can offer.

So especially now, with our PM CompModel developmental support, plus our capacity for assessment against a Project Manager's career path with four levels of certification, there is a lot of word that needs to get out. And thus asapm succeeds in our mission, to advance the practice of Project Management.

This was the genesis for the still-fledgling asapm Speakers' Bureau. There are other new intiatives that we are working on too. Which reminds us, have you checked the Volunteer Classifieds page lately?

We'll see another round of great Conferences that asapm is involved with in late Fall and Winter, so stay tuned! Yes, we need Conferences, and so do you: whether as a speaker or attendee, you help advance the practice of competent PM one step at a time.

9. Competence Enablers Go Live At June Conferences
As announced in the last newsletter, the asapm Competence Enabler program has a Project Manager (we still need team members) and we are already seeing results. Registered Competence Enablers will have their marketing materials shown at an asapm/IPMA booth at two conferences in June, the Delivering Project Excellence Conference in Scottsdale, June 4-7, and the Gartner Portfolio & Project Management Summit June 25-27 in Beverly Hills.

So what is the Competence Enabler program? See the information below, from the asapm website:

A Competence Enabler is a Project Management products or services vendor who understands the difference between basic PM Knowledge, and the Skills, Behavioral Attributes and Competences needed to achieve consistent project performance. CEs have access to special versions of asapm's USA National Competence Baseline NCB), that identifies the minimum target levels of needed Knowledge, Skills, Behavioral Attributes and Competences needed to fill each level of asapm's Four-Level Competence-Based Project Manager Certification Program.

Competence Enablers can identify how their products, consulting services and training programs help support Project Manager and key project stakeholder career development, advanced Project Manager Certifications, and the individual Competence Elements or Groups of Elements individuals or Enterprises need to improve their project and program success.

Competence Enablers are eligible to receive custom versions of asapm's newest release of our Project Management CompModel, and can map their products or services to the NCB Competence Elements or Groups, and use the resulting customized CompModel with their customers or potential customers. This is an "everyone wins" benefit, because we see far too much PM training today that has little-to-no impact on the Competence Elements that organizations need the most.

Gee, based on this description, everyone should be a Competence Enabler!
