1. Lew Ireland writes: Project Managers as Role Models
Project Management in some form has existed for centuries as evidenced by the number of artifacts around the world. The Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, the Panama Canal, the Suez Canal, the Trans-Siberia Railroad, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike to mention some better-known projects that have constructed well-known products.

There are thousands of lesser-known products that have been constructed over 5000 years such as the Cathedrals of Europe and the Grand Canal of China. Each had one or more “project managers” to lead the effort.

That is the introduction to Lew's latest article. To see the whole article, click this link.

2. asapm 2005 Elections Complete
The 2005 elections are complete, with the following results:
Philip Simpson, Secretary-Treasurer
Morgan Henrie, Director of Marketing
John McHugh, Director of Member Services

We congratulate John on his return to office, and Philip and Morgan on their election to office. We have a lot of work to do this year, and each will be forming Project Teams to help complete the responsibilities of their respective areas. Please support your new asapm leaders, by volunteering to join their Project Teams, or to help with their initiatives. We'll have more about those Project Teams and their initiatives in our next newsletter. Again, congratulations to your new asapm Board Members.

Thanks go to Ed Fern, 2005 Elections Committee Chair, and to retiring Director of Marketing Bob Youker, who served on the Elections Committee, together with Graham Kneale, who kept everyone honest. asapm thanks you!

Speaking of the Elections Committee, the 2006 Elections process will begin in January. The positions up for election next year are President and Director of Education. Please consider serving asapm by serving in one of the offices, on the Elections committee, or on one of the Project Teams in a Director's area. Each Director has one or more Project Teams, and this is a great way to prepare yourself to serve as an asapm Board member.

3. Duncan Announces November Standards Session in Boston
asapm Director of Standards Bill Duncan has announced the organization's First Annual Open Standards Development session, to be held Sunday and Monday, November 6-7, 2005 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Waltham, Massachusetts (near Boston).

Duncan said that the primary purpose of this session is to develop "practical, useful guidance to help project managers on the job." He noted that poorly managed projects such as the FBI's recent $170 million software development failure can be a significant drain on the US economy. Duncan added "there are plenty of high-level frameworks available to provide broad guidance, but there really isn't much to help project managers deal with their day-to-day challenges."

4. asapm and USA at IPMA November 2005 World Congress
Based on early regisitrations, it looks like asapm and the USA will be in force at the International Project Management Association World Congress in November, 2005 in New Delhi, India. Led by asapm President Lew Ireland, and with speakers including Ron Waller, Bill Duncan, Morgan Henrie and Stacy Goff, and with many other asapm members in attendance, we hope to exceed our 2004 showing in Budapest. As well, the Congress program shows many other speakers from the USA.

The early registration discount has been extended to July 31, for those of us who are As Late As Possible schedulers. Click here to find out more about the Congress, or to register. This is the first Congress outside of Europe in 40 years, and should be incredible! .

If you are attending the 2005 World Congress, please let us know, and we'll make sure we add your name to our list for updates and news. We've been doing some research on the adventures of visiting Delhi, including stories of late-night arrivals at the airport, currency exchange excitement, and the hotel situation.

See You In Delhi!

5. Donna Fitzgerald Gives You: The Power of Permission
Who gives you permission to do your job? You? Your boss? Your company? If your answer is that the company hired you but you define how you do your job, odds are you are working in a company that follows the concepts of Anglo-Saxon Law. On the other hand if you feel that your company tells you specifically how you can do your job you’re most likely working in a company that follows the tenets of Roman law.

This article, by asapm Director of Education Donna Fitzgerald, gives you permission to be the best Project Manager you can be.

As part of asapm members' "Two Memberships In One", here is the latest from IPMA:

For those who are not familiar with the qualifications of the competence and knowledge levels of this unique program that certifies Project Managers, the pdf document explains more about the unique Four-Level-Certification (4-L-C) program. To download the 2004 PM YearBook, click here (it is on our PMCert site).

Summer 2005 IPMA Project Management Practice Magazine Available
In addition to the IPMA Journal, a juried journal publishing articles and research for the advancement of Project Management, our friend and IPMA Vice President Ed Naughton produces and distributes Project Management Practice, a very nice quarterly magazine with articles of interest to PM Practitioners.

This latest issue includes asapm member and recent Board Member Bob Youker's article, Two Models of the Project Environment, and other articles, including a very interesting one, What is the Future of Change Management?

7. asapm Pays Tribute to David Curling, 1935-2005
(This message, from asapm President Lew Ireland, acknowledges David H. Curling's contributions. David's Obituary is posted on the asapm website.

David Curling, of Ottawa, Ontario, a long-time leader in project management, passed away to leave a void in the Global Project Management Community. He will be sorely missed for his continual contribution to the growth of project management knowledge. David is perhaps best known by many for starting and maintaining PM Forum, a website that promotes project management activities around the world.

David's work was recognized for his work in 1998 by the Project Management Institute when he was elected to be a Fellow. On the International scene, David was known throughout global project management community as one who spoke his mind on the issues and challenges of project management. His guidance came from years of experience and use of project management.

Our sympathy goes out to Lois, his wife of 54 years, for her loss.

8. asapm Raffle Helps Promote Project Summit, BusinessAnalystWorld
Once again, asapm is helping promote the best PM-related Conferences. These two Conferences coincide with the new BOK Guide's revised Statement of Work, which will help drive the demand for better Requirements. ProjectSummit & BusinessAnalystWorld combines proven PM with the methods that will help provide better requirements, for your best USA-based Project Management event of the rest of this year.

We worked with Conference Event Director Adam Kahn last year, and that event was the year's most successful show that we helped promote. Successful for asapm because of the exposure we received, and successful for his organization, for its turnout and the quality of the presentations.

9. Youker Writes, Speaks, and Continues His WorldBank PM Curriculum
Robert Youker is stepping down from his position on the asapm Board, but he isn't slowing down.

Bob is asapm's former Director of Marketing, and remains very active in asapm and in the International Project Management Association. He is speaking at an event in Lille, France next month, and has provided his paper for publishing at the asapm website. Project Management as a Core Competence argues the case for savvy CEOs to recognize and grow the effective practice of Project Management as a competitive advantage.

Bob's World Bank Project Management curriculum has helped whole countries to improve their project management practices, and in anticipation of the release of the World Bank PM cd (not yet available, but soon to be), he has arranged for his modules to be serialized in the members-only section of the asapm website.

The curriculum is built in modules, the modules have sessions, and each session has one or more lessons. The target audience for the curriculum is Project Managers in Developing Countries. However, you will find most of the content to be useful for any project.

The materials also come with exercises, self-tests, and a Case Study. As we encounter them, they too will be posted on the site.

Learning Links
Download the Initial Session, that explains the Course Structure and Modules; 1.1.1 Course Structure (pdf). To get access to the rest of the program, all you'll have to do is join asapm: World Bank is making this curriculum available for members only!
